Environment Action Line (Altona):
Registering a Complaint is just a Call away
In the late 80’s, the environmental performance of the Altona Chemical Complex was significantly worse than it is today, with odour, noise, and flares causing large numbers of community complaints. In 1991 there were seven companies in the Complex, and it was very difficult for residents to know which company to call to register a complaint. Several days generally passed before complaints were passed on to the relevant chemical company by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) or the local Council, which often made it difficult to locate the source of the problem.
The Environmental Action Line was set up in 1991 to create a single point of contact with the companies in the Altona Chemical Complex for environmental complaints. It made it easy for residents to register their concerns with all the chemical companies, as only one call was required. It also helped the companies to improve their performance, because calls were often received while the problem was still present, thus allowing a far more effective investigation and corrective action. All calls to the Environmental Action Line and follow up action are passed on to both the EPA and the local Council.
The Environmental Action Line number is manned 24 hours a day.
The free call number is 1800 061 050.
The local Altona community is urged to use this number if they want to register a complaint. Remember the quicker you call, the better the chances of identifying the cause – quickly.
