Environment Improvement Plan (Altona) - 2009 Environmental Action Plan

Qenos's Environment Improvement Plan (EIP) for Altona is a commitment made by Qenos after consultation with local residents nominated by the Altona Complex Neighbourhood Consultative Group (ACNCG), the City of Hobsons Bay, City West Water and the Environment Protection Authority. It allows the community to have input into how Qenos allocates its resources in its effort to improve its environmental performance. Our first EIP was launched in 1994. Our current EIP5 came into effect in 2008.
Under the EIP, an annual Environmental Action Plan (EAP) is developed each year, listing the activities for that year. The current 2009 EAP contains 30 specific action items.

SHEOS.first@qenos

Our business-wide Safety, Health and Environment Operating System (SHEOS) brings together key elements from international best practice systems. This ensures Qenos is a leader in Australian safety, health and environment performance standards. SHEOS contains 21 codes of practice that provide a framework to ensure continuous improvement in the safety, health and environment area. This brochure provides an overview of SHEOS and explains how it acts as an umbrella covering all parts of our business.

Responsible Care®
Responsible Care® is an initiative of the chemicals industry internationally to improve safety, health and environmental performance. The Plastics and Chemicals Industry Association (PACIA) oversees the program within Australia. This initiative has the following key aspects:
  • Abiding Principles - Chemicals sector members of PACIA are required to commit to manage their business according to these principles.
  • Codes of Practice - Eight codes of practice define the performance required for each company's operations and products.
  • PACIA - Communication & Advisory Council provides ongoing advice to industry on issues of importance to the community.
  • Credibility of Results - Key performance indicators and code assessments provide evidence of performance.

Qenos and its antecedent companies have supported the Responsible Care® program in Australia since its inception in 1989. Qenos operates its business in accordance with the principles of Responsible Care® .
Further information about Responsible Care® is available on the PACIA website.

National Pollutant Inventory
Qenos supports the “Community Right to Know” concept and is open and transparent in its interaction with the wider community. While Qenos and its antecedent companies have been supplying similar data for many years, Qenos supports the establishment of the National Pollutant Inventory (NPI).
In 1999 Qenos submitted emissions data on 36 compounds, including VOCs, to fully comply with reporting requirements for the National Pollutant Inventory. Emissions data for the extended list of 90 compounds was reported in 2000, ahead of schedule.
Further information about the program and the data collected is available on the National Pollutant Inventory website. The data for Qenos can be found by conducting a facility search for both Victoria and NSW.
